Oncology Massage Berkhamsted

Oncology massage is an approach to massage therapy based in both compassion and specialised massage treatments to help people manage their experience with cancer. Benefits include improved relaxation, sleep, and immune function as well as relieving anxiety, pain, fatigue and nausea.

I offer two types of massage for people experiencing the side effects of cancer and cancer treatments.

Oncology Massage is the modification of existing massage therapy techniques in order to safely work with complications of cancer and cancer treatment. Oncology massage uses a light-touch therapy technique, applying oil directly to the body using slow, rhythmic sequences.

During this challenging time, massage has been shown to help reduce stress by aiding relaxation. It can increase energy and has been known to improve sleep patterns.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage is another specialist technique designed to relieve the symptoms of cancer or the side effects of conventional cancer treatments. This massage is a gentle, rhythmic, light pressure treatment that stimulates the lymphatic system helping fluid and waste leave the body. It also relaxes the sympathetic nervous system, reduces pain and enhances the activity of the immune system.

The Manual Lymphatic Drainage massage technique was primarily designed for lymphoedema management. However, it also has proven helpful for the following conditions:

•  Autoimmune conditions: Rheumatoid Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and       Lupus

•  Stress and Hypertension

•  Sinusitis, Bronchitis, Tonsillitis and Laryngitis

•  Pregnancy and Post-Surgical Swelling

As an oncology-certified therapist, I am trained to make sure that each massage meets the unique and changing needs of the individual and have a solid understanding of the complexities of the condition and its symptoms. I have been specially trained to know how to adapt position or techniques to maximise client comfort and relaxation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to have massage when you have cancer?

Specialist oncology massage is 100% safe. Research has shown that massage will not spread or worsen the symptoms of cancer. Recent studies that look at the benefits and safety of massage therapy for cancer patients include:

Examine the effects and safety of massage therapy in cancer care'

What does Manual Lymphatic Drainage do for my body?

Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) cleanses the body’s tissues by increasing the amount of fluid moved through the lymphatic system. This speeds the removal of toxins and waste from the body and accelerates the healing process.

By stimulating the lymphatic system, the massage can:

  • Boost the immune system

  • Eliminate toxins and clear blockages

  • Reduce puffiness and swelling caused by lymphoedema, surgery or arthritis

  • Reduce pain, anxiety and depression

How is each technique different from regular massage?

Traditional massage works deep into the muscles and soft tissues in the body to stretch and loosen them.

Oncology Massage - is a very light touch massage, similar to applying lotion to your body. It is done with massage oil directly on the skin and focuses on creating deep relaxation with slow, rhythmic strokes.

Manual Lymph Drainage acts on the tiny lymph vessels found in the skin and subcutaneous tissues. MLD directly reduces inflammation and swelling within the body. In this massage you will be fully dressed (ideally in loose, comfortable clothing) and light pumping motion will be used to move the lymph through the body.

Do I need permission from my doctor?

Yes, verbal consent from your physician is needed for anyone in active cancer treatment or post-surgery.

What causes Lymphoedema?

Lymphoedema is prevalent throughout the world. The major cause in developed countries is the damage done to the lymph system incidental to cancer surgery and/or radiation, or by the malignant disease itself. It is also possible to be born with an insufficient lymphatic system, which causes lymphoedema later in life.
