Life is short. Take the trip. Drink the wine. Burn the expensive candle.
My mother was diagnosed with dementia when she was in her 60’s. She’s now 75 and has been living in a locked dementia unit for several years. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you how difficult it is to see what her life has become.
In a world where 60 is the new 40, people constantly express their shock at how young my mother was when this disease took her. With better nutrition, exercise and healthcare, we seem to believe that we will all be like Mick Jagger and gyrating on stage at 70. But the reality is, as it ever was, life is uncertain and any day could be your last.
Deborah James, from the podcast You, Me and the Big C, said in an interview in last Saturday’s Times, ‘Cancer makes you realise the value of your life and that you should not be a slave to the treadmill of ambition and expectations. Some free-spirited souls are able to see that, but most of us have to be forcibly taken off that train to be able to make the most of life.’
Are you a slave to the treadmill of ambition and expectation? Are you head-down, stressed-out and nose-to-the-grindstone? You can stop and you can change. We all need this in-your-face reminder. I'm not saying go out tomorrow and quit your job, but for goodness sake take a break! Whether it's a 20 minute soak in a hot bath or a trip down to the pub on a Tuesday night, find some time to relax, have fun and enjoy this crazy place called earth.
Your life will be over before you know it. Take the trip. Drink the wine. Burn the expensive candle.
